Established in 1888, the South Texas town of Alice, Texas, is the county seat of Jim Wells County. A city with a 2015 estimated population of 19,408 (according to U.S. Census Bureau figures), Alice, TX, was named for the daughter of Captain Richard King, founder of King Ranch, a major historical attraction of Kingsville, the county seat of neighboring Kleberg County. Prior to being named Alice, the city was first called Bandana and, later, Kleberg.

Known as the “Cradle of the Cattle Industry,” in the early days, Alice, Texas, was blessed with an abundance of longhorn cattle and wild mustangs roaming free on its prairies. Industrious ranchers realized that while there were few cattle markets at the time, resulting in low prices (three to four dollars a head), they could command 10 times that by selling their cattle in the North where beef was scarce. Hundreds of thousands of head of cattle were driven to market from the area over the first year – a 1,000 mile trip that used one of several different trails. However, when the open range was replaced with areas fenced in by barbed wire in the mid-1880s, cattle drives ceased and the new railroads became the method of choice for transporting cattle, resulting in the city of Alice being considered the hub of the cattle industry.

Alice, TX, has played a key role in the history of the state of Texas, providing the area with a number of historical sites, and today the city is a hub of industry, commerce, medicine, and tourism.
