Ingleside is said to have been named by John W. Vineyard, one of the early landowners in the new community, who reportedly named the town Ingleside (which means “Fireside”) in honor of his ancestral home in Scotland. Once a flourishing and profitable grape- and wine-producing area, Ingleside was forced to find other means of sustaining its economy in the 1930s, after the vines introduced by George Hatch and his son John in the 1880s were destroyed by blight. After facing varying periods of prosperity and hardship, the city of Ingleside was finally incorporated in 1951, following the building of aluminum and metal fabrication plants by Brauer Corporation and Reynolds Metal. When it was first incorporated, the town had only 850 residents.
